The kingdom is God’s creation. On it is the stamp ‘Manufactured by God’. His kingdom is so important and such a great Creation. It encompasses every godly principle we need to know and is the enabler of the great life God desires for us all.

The kingdom is so spectacular that in order to show the greatness, the splendor and the genius of what God created, an understanding of its concepts and foundations is required so that true knowledge, understanding and wisdom may be attained.

Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. [Proverbs 24:3-4]

Through this journey I want to show you the kingdom of God, so that you can establish the truth and wisdom you need to build the life God designed and desires for you. Your purpose will be found within the kingdom, but in order to have a kingdom life, you need to first know and understand the basics.

Characteristics

To understand what makes a kingdom it needs to be broken down into a few characteristics. Firstly there is a King, and He rules and governs His people. How He governs is defined in and through the constitution, and His kingdom is designed to increase His territory.

A legitimate kingdom should have each one of these characteristics. Let’s see how this aligns with the kingdom of God:

• A King: Jesus is the King of the kingdom.
• People: These are people who are saved, they have decided to make Jesus their Lord.
• Government: His government is the system by which He rules and governs.
• Constitution: His constitution, the Bible, can be read and understood easily today.
• Territory: His people are His territory and there is a mighty war on earth for them today.

The original Greek word for kingdom is basileia

Vine’s Dictionary defines it as primarily an abstract noun, denoting “sovereignty, royal power, dominion.”

The kingdom is sovereign, meaning there is a supreme ruler who possesses supreme or ultimate power and authority.

The kingdom has royal power, which is to have the status of a king or a member of their family with the ability or capacity to do something or rule.

The kingdom has dominion, which is to have control and to govern.
A requirement for God’s kingdom is that there be a king.

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?”
Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” [John 18:37]

Jesus is the King of the kingdom of God, He has a system to govern His people; His government is not a democracy. Theocracy is the name given for God’s government, it is a form of government in which a deity is officially recognized as the civil ruler and official policy is governed by officials who are regarded as being divinely guided. This is a very simplistic definition though, as God’s government is so much more than the governments we see on the earth today.

Why did God need a government? To discover this we need to look at the original intention for man:

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” [Genesis 1:26-28]

God created man in His image, according to His likeness. God is a King, a Lord, a ruler. Does Scripture not say that Jesus is the “King of kings and Lord of lords” [Revelation 19:16]?

God is a creator and is powerful. Man was made according to His image and likeness, but what could man rule over?

The Story

Let me tell you a story about a father who was a property mogul. Everywhere the father went he bought property and soon made billions. His empire was an effective, well-oiled machine. This father had a son whom he loved very much and he invited him to join him in business. Although the son started small, he was being groomed for greatness.

The father wanted his son to experience what it was like to make decisions, to grow an organization, and to have the thrill of birthing something out of nothing and seeing it grow and flourish. The father imparted all of his leadership skills and his philosophies to his son, training him in all his ways so that he too would be able to build a prosperous business. The father wanted his son to be more than just a replaceable cog in a giant machine; he wanted him to create and establish his own empire. So he sent his son to another country to start his own property business, armed with all the business acumen of his father as well as the support of his father’s entire business empire.

The son was thriving in his new position, creating, ruling and governing the new empire. With the help and guidance of his father, he established a huge territory in just seven months, but things went sour fast! The son got caught up with a drug lord who gave him a reality altering pill, called the Apple drug, that he promised would open up his eyes to a new world and a new experience. The son became addicted to this pill and he couldn’t get enough. His debt started racking up and, in no time at all, he lost his empire and all he had built. To pay off his crippling debt, the drug lord forced the son to work as his slave in a remote camp, helping to manufacture the very drug that had destroyed his future. The beloved son was now a slave and lost to his father.

Even though the father no longer had contact with his son, his great love cried out for him. He wanted to rescue his son. The little details that he did get of his son depicted a grim story of how his son, once full of life and power, once a great leader, was now both a slave and an addict.

Believing that nothing was more important, the man left his own empire and set off to save his son. After doing some recon, he discovered the situation was even worse than he initially suspected. The drug lord had amassed huge territory with a large, formidable army. His drug empire was continually expanding with new manufacturing camps being established all the time. The drug lord was now king of the land and greatly feared by all.

However, the father was resolute and unafraid. He had fought in many battles during his life and was a great military leader who did not fear war. He had never lost a battle and although the odds were stacked firmly against him, he wasn’t going to start losing now. He realized his son was in too deep and a simple rescue operation wouldn’t cut it – there would have to be some sacrifice involved.

So he designed a three-year plan to rescue his son. He would train twelve men and teach them his ways. This team of twelve would operate in the captured land with the father. They would walk, talk and be trained by the father, round-the-clock for three years. He would devote all his time and energy to prepare for his son’s rescue and train the men. At the end of the third year he devised a three-day invasion of the drug lord’s camp to rescue his son.

The plan worked well and the twelve men became well-trained friends who he trusted to help save his son. After three long years it was finally time. The father had acquired land right next to the drug manufacturing camp where his son was kept. This camp was at the heart of the operation and the drug lord himself lived there. The camp was located on a river, which acted as the point of entry.
